Advent – Day 02

Trusting God's plans

Luke 1:5–25

My plan was to leave Kisiizi in July, but I have had a growing conviction that this may not be God’s will. Another doctor, Josephine, will return to Kisiizi next summer as a paediatrician. I have been asking for someone to fill the gap between when I leave and when she returns. The children’s ward will manage fine, but I’m not sure about the special care baby unit. I think that God has been telling me that I should be the one to fill that gap. Perhaps baby Kakye illustrates why. He weighed only 800 grams (1.7 pounds) at birth. When I was called to see him I thought that he was too small and that I would not be able to do anything for him, but when I saw him, he opened his eyes and cried. As I write this he shows every sign of continuing in life.

God our Father, we acknowledge that what we know of your great plans is only ever partial. We like Zechariah struggle to receive the bigger picture of what you are doing in our lives and in the world we are called to serve. Help us to trust in your provision for our future and to respond to your plans for our lives with hope and imagination.

Lord God,
when all we see are the problems we face,
help us to discover the opportunities that lie within.
When we have more questions than answers,
help us to respond in faith and not in fear.
Where we are crippled by doubt and indecision,
shine your light into our lives and illuminate our thinking.
Where we struggle to see the path ahead,
help us to learn to follow one step at a time.
When we feel weary and discouraged,
remind us of your call to follow.
When we fear what the future might hold,
help us to trust in your love. Amen.
