Aiming to be Christ on the streets

How do you spend your Friday nights? You’ll find me with colleagues from local churches in a Street Pastor* team in our town’s parks and on the streets.

Yvonne Cavanagh - street pastorOur aim is to share the care and compassion of Jesus with all we meet in those different locations – teenagers who don’t know what else to do with their time, people out for the evening in the local pubs and clubs, taxi drivers, those in the food outlets, pub landlords.

It’s an amazing privilege aiming to be Christ on the streets and establishing relationships with these different constituencies.

We’re there for the vulnerable people, those who just want to talk, to give flip flops to those young ladies who are struggling in the early hours to walk on their high heels!

Sometimes we are able to share the gospel – when people ask us why we want to be out talking to them at 2am in the freezing cold and rain, or when someone comes up and says ‘I’ve got a God question’.

It’s also a marvellous opportunity to grow relationships between churches and to see God at work in the local community.
