What the Kitgum cross means to me

It causes a few jeers - and sometimes holds up the queue at Sainsbury's, says Callum from Oxford

Callum wearing the Kitgum crossI get all sorts of responses - some jeer and suggest I can’t afford a gold one, but others want to know more.

When they do I explain that the crucifix is the one Christ died on and the wood is from a tree that was used in Northern Uganda to torture and kill children who refused to join the Lord’s Resistance Army.

It really reminds me of the horrible nature of Jesus’ death and what it says to us, so I am willing to wear it every day.

I once held up the queue at Sainsbury’s checkout because the cashier was so interested to know more.

I realised I could not talk for long - but wearing the cross creates some interesting opportunities.
